Nordic Ground Beef and Potato Bake (Jauheliha-perunavuoka)

A quintessential Finnish comfort food, this one-pan bake is a weekly staple in Nordic households. It is celebrated for its simplicity, making it an ideal family dinner that tastes even better as leftovers the following day.
Ingredients (6 servings)
- 1.5 lbs (680 g) Yukon Gold potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
- 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef (90% or leaner)
- 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp (6 g) salt
- 1/2 tsp (1 g) black pepper
- 1/4 tsp (0.5 g) ground allspice (the signature Nordic spice for beef)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and onion until the onion is translucent. Season with salt, black pepper, and allspice.
- Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer the sliced potatoes and the beef mixture, starting and ending with a layer of potatoes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs to create the “egg milk” (munamaito) binder. Pour the mixture evenly over the dish.
- Bake for 45–60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
